Rural Health Programs
Agromed

Since the early 1990’s, CCHS has worked with the Rural Alabama Health Alliance (RAHA), Auburn University, and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System to implement an Agromedicine program, including a resource center at the Health Sciences Library and programmatic activities.  Agromedicine combines the knowledge of medical and agricultural sciences to meet rural health needs.  Rural Medical Pipeline students experience agromedicine by making farm fieldtrips to observe and discuss health issues arising from agriculture with extension agents and farmers.  The program conducts agromedicine research to learn about the health-related issues affecting farmers.  With the support of county extension agents, the Agromedicine program’s outreach to involve rural school children with Rural Medical Scholars in studying farm health and safety has culminated in a popular (with high school students) Agromedicine Knowledge Bowl competition between school teams from several counties.
